At what distance does someone following behind you into a building have to be before it’s OK not to hold the door for them?
There’s a problem at both ends of the spectrum…
Too close and you try and pull-off the zing-n-fling. You zing the door open and then fling it as you go through to keep the door from closing on the person following on your heels. This can backfire when they’re slower than you anticipated and now they are awkwardly reaching for the door handle that’s accelerating away from them.
Either way, you look like a schmuck because you’ve admitted that you knew someone was there, you just didn’t bother to hold the door for them.
Too far away is also a problem. Here, you debate whether or not to hold the door. The zing-n-fling wont cut it. But if they’re just a bit too far away, then you create extreme anxiety on the part of the other person as they race to the opened door.
Then there’s that gray area. You might be able to get away with not holding the door, but maybe not. Then you get into a little foot race with the other person, thinking, “if I speed up and increase the gap, then there’s no question that I don’t need to hold the door!”.
Last, we have the “open-door-loafer”. This is the person that you’ve held the door for and then they go as slow as possible getting there. They may even pretend that they don’t see you holding the door. When they get to the door, they act surprised, “Oh, thanks”…implying…”I didn’t see you there”. Yeah right.
Hey….get the door yourself and save everybody the stress
Welcome back!
